Jon Orders from New Zealand placed first in the Open Hang Gliding class at this years Lumby Air Races held in Conjunction with Lumby Days.
Friday and Saturday were both good racing days as the weather held up to complete 6 laps around and over the town of Lumby BC Canada.
Pilots came from BC, Alberta, New Zealand and the USA to try to win the $2000.00 cash purse sponsored by The Lumby Days Society, Lumby Air Force Flying Club, Lumby Airpark Inc., Raven Aviation Ltd., SkyZlimit Production Ltd. and all the cash donators at the dance.
Pilots foot launched off of Coopers Mountain just north of Lumby, and rose in thermals (hot rising air currents) to cloud base at aprox. 8000 feet both days, then raced down Lumby ridge, crossed over to Saddle Mountain and back to Coopers in a triangle. Pilots would turn and climb up under cumulus clouds to gain more altitude for the glide to the next turn point. Good skill and excellent judgment was needed to win this event.
A celebration dance was held in the hanger at the Lumby Airpark where 6 bands played to the crowd. Some of the bands were recorded live by SkyZlimit Productions Ltd.
The Lumby Air Force has been hosting flying competitions in Lumby since 1976 and would like to thank all the other sponsors, volunteers and bands that made this event possible and are planning a one week plus race for next year.
